Canoeing the Dordogne and central places to stay?

June 20th we are arriving in Bordeaux by train. We would like to rent a car and stay at one central spot to sightsee and canoe for one or two days...maybe even staying at a inn overnight. We will be in the area about five days.

Any suggestions on an itinerary for five daysand places to stay that are moderate prices or so outstanding that it is worth the price. thanks!

for a central place: near la roque gageac is not bad (maybe not the cheapest place but if you wnat to have moderate price do not stay close from the dordogne river and go a little bit down south like gourdon area)

1 day for the eastern part (rocamadour, padirac, beaulieu..)

1 day for sarlat la roque gageac domme tremolat beynac lascaux

1 day for the lot valley (yes believe me) from cahors to figeac with pech merle grottes

and 2 days for canoe as i have understood

of course with my suggestions you need not to wake up at 11 am

do not miss the center of sarlat by night with all the lights they put that is a must see

In May 2004 we stayed in a great B%26amp;B, La. Ferme Fleurie, near La. roque Geagac. Good location to visit all areas . Took a canoe one day. Great fun. Madame Martine and her family were great hosts.

Best,

We spent two weeks just outside Sarlat this summer and still didn%26#39;t have time to do everything we would have liked to. There is much to see and do.

In the region, it seems all roads lead to Sarlat, which the traffic jams round Sarlat will vouch for.

If you visit or are in Sarlat on a Saturday or Wednesday, these are market days and you can spend all day in the market and exploring the town itself and then enjoy a meal in one of the multitude of restaurants.

The previous poster who suggested:

can%26#39;t have got out of his car.

There is no way you could do all this in a day, or even two days. Domme is worth the visit, even if only for the views over the valley and along the Dordogne River. Lascaux caves, you have to buy the tickets in advance from the nearby town of Montignac and then drive to the caves. The visits are timed and there is quite often a wait of several hours between buying your tickets and your tour time. Personally I found Roque St Christophe and the Proumeyssac cave at Le Bugue more interesting.

Depending on how much canoeing you want to do, you can spend one or two days. If you start at Vitrac, then you will go past most of the more spectacular sights along that part of the river and this is a good days trip. Alternatively, or as well as, if you start upstream from Vitrac and canoe down to it, the river is mostly tree lined, so it%26#39;s very peaceful.

There appeared to be plenty of places to stay in Sarlat varying from simple guest houses to more up market hotels, so I am sure there will be something that meets your needs. If you search on this forum, there have been previous threads on the subject.

Enjoy the trip.
