Metro technicality question

We rode the Metro at least twice per day on our recent 10 day trip to Paris, so I feel like I understand the system pretty well, but I have one question that I couldn%26#39;t figure out. When you are on a train and looking at the route map over the door, sometimes there are a group of two or three or more stops grouped in a box. What is that box supposed to tell me? Let me know if the question doesn%26#39;t make sense.

Click on %26quot;Plan des lignes%26quot; (in the left column) and then on %26quot;Plan des toutes les lignes%26quot; - choose a random line-number and what you get is (as far as I remember) exactly the same as you see over the doors in the metro coach. What do you mean by %26quot;box%26quot; ??

|||

It looks like they don%26#39;t put the boxes on the versions on the website, but those are indeed the route maps I was referring to. It%26#39;s not very important, I was just curious.

|||

it is the metro lines that you can take at the stop. for example if you are on a certain line, looking at the stops in the subway and you see one with 3, 9, and rer c it means if you go out at this stop then you can change for the 3 and 9 lines and rer c. some stops dont have any number because you would have to go out of the metro to take another station that would not %26quot;cross%26quot; the same line.

|||

As usual, Alex is correct. The boxes tell you which lines you can transfer to.

|||

Remember the term %26quot;correspondence%26quot;..? Those are the lines %26quot;corresponding%26quot; to that station. Shown on a paper map as a white circle with the intersecting metro lines.

|||

No, not the tranfer lines. There is a box around a group of stops on a single line.

|||

maybe is this (as everybody is really wondering what could be your box) :

sometimes they change one correpondance or one information on the route map over the door so they put a new stciker on the map including several stops and what you think is a box could be this new sticker..

|||

%26quot; There is a box around a group of stops on a single line. %26quot;

Speaking of the line diagram over the door :

There used to be a box encompassing the termini of the lines connecting at a given station, but it%26#39;s an old design, only found nowadays on Line 7 bis ... today, only the numbers of the connecting line(s) are shown, not the destinations.

Speaking of the system diagram :

a box encompassing several stations on the system diagram means that these stations are treated as a single %26quot;correspondance%26quot;.

The biggest one, by the way, is Saint Augustin / Saint Lazare / Haussmann Saint Lazare / Auber / Havre Caumartin / Opéra

If it wasn%26#39;t a %26#39;box%26#39; that showed the corresponding metro lines, was it something to indicate a range of stations are closed for renovations? Usually, this is an X thru the station like this:

but maybe they %26#39;boxed%26#39; them together on that map..

who know.. a picture truly would be worth a thousand words in this case..!

(sigh) I guess I will just have to fly back to Paris and take a picture...I%26#39;m sure my boss won%26#39;t mind when I don%26#39;t show up at work again tomorrow. :)
