Where To Stay

My wife and I will be coming down from Paris in June to the Nice area for 4 nights before heading on into Italy. Any suggestions on where we should make our base? I will be renting a car so we can visit the nearby towns. Would like something on the water and in the $225/nt. range. We are in our 50s. Thanks

Consider the classic Hotel Welcome, Villefranche. Easy access by road to the perched villages like Eze and Roquebrun, less hassle parking than the big towns. You are virtually on the water, and surrounded by super restaurants with a small community atmosphere. Then off to Italy just down the road

If I decide not to rent a car, which most people are saying that it isn%26#39;t neccesaary, is Villefranche sur mer still a good location for our 4 night base, and is everything reachable by train or bus.

Yes and no. I suggested Villefranche for the purpose of driving to the villages. If you are going to go public transport for the four days, then you will find yourself travelling a lot to to Nice a lot to change bus or train, then it may be sensible to consider Nice as your base.

A car is a complete liabilirty in Nice, so its a choice you need to make.

Personally, I think the car is a go-er only if you want the freedom of the open road, plan to reach the places buses don%26#39;t go, like touring the grand corniches and off the the Gorges de Verdun and the mountains. If your plan simply involves Vence, St Paul and Eze, then the bus from Nice is your best form of transport. In which case a b ase in Nice makes sense.
