Giverny

We want to stay in Gvierny/Vernon as they look so interesting and use it as a base to visit Paris (use the train) is this a realistic idea?

Not to visit Paris. If you want to visit Paris you need to stay in Paris.

I think the train ride is a little over an hour from Vernon to Gare du Nord. So, it is possible to visit Paris from there but it could be a waste of time of you want to go everyday or spend an evening in Paris. And you know that Monet%26#39;s house and garden is closed now and won%26#39;t reopen until Spring. Unless you have a car, I recommend you stay in Vernon where you can be closer to the train station.

Thanks for your replys. We might have to reconsider our plans.

We plan to be in Vernon at the beginning of September and we do have a car but as we are not used to driving in lots of traffic and with a left hand drive car we thought it may be better to stay outside Paris and experience some of the French countryside.

If you want to visit Paris and enjoy cheap accommodation in the countryside, the area of Giverny is an ideal basis. You can leave your car at the train station of Vernon,(or walk to the station if you take a room in Vernon) and the ride is only 42 mn to Saint-Lazare Paris train station. Thousands of people commute every day from Vernon to work in Paris. However, the town and the villages around are in Normandy, away from Paris suburbs.

An alternative is to drive to Poissy (30mn)by highway, and take the RER (underground) in Poissy. There are more RER than trains, especially in the evening, and you can enjoy Paris by night and come back at midnight if you want.

You may find more information and even train timetables in the transport section of the Giverny and Vernon website.

Thankyou Givernette. I have been away from this site for awhile so I%26#39;ve just caught up with your posting. We%26#39;ve booked a house in Vernon and the house is 10 mins walk from the train station. The house is lovely and the area around here looks absolutely beautiful and so interesting. I have been on the internet looking for train times and the latest train leaving Paris for Vernon seems to leave at 1700. Thankyou for your idea about driving to Poissy and catching the underground into Paris. I think one late night is possibly all we could handle. We are looking forward to visiting this area including Monet%26#39;s house in Giverny and taking in the history of Normandy as well as the sights of Paris of course.

Hello.

You will really love Giverny and Monet`s garden and house!!

We have just come back to Norway after a week staying outside Paris ( 1 hour by car - not Giverny),and did tours every day; Giverny, Chartres, Normandy,Provins and Beauvais and much more.

Giverny and Normandy were the absolutely highlights of our week.

Arrive early in Giverny - lots of tourists, but very good parking area (free). The Musee d`art Americain was nice, but the best part was of course was the house and garden. Hope the flowers will be just as beautiful when you will be there.

We had a lovely dinner at Ancien Hotel Baudy- very friendly staff and cheap. The little village itself is lovely, and we have decided to come back for a stay in the village.

Have a wonderful trip.

I have a lot of photos from Giverny - try to look at them, and you will understand why.

Thankyou Grethe. We%26#39;re not due in France until the 16th of September so we%26#39;ve still a little while to go yet. Can%26#39;t wait!! We%26#39;ve definitely decided on Vernon as a place to stay to explore the surrounding area. I%26#39;m spending time researching the area so we will have some background knowledge before we get there. REALLY looking forward to it. Cheers.

Hi,

We have been back home for almost a month and our stay in Vernon and the walk from Vernon to Giverny to visit Monet%26quot;s house really sticks in my mind. It is a beautiful little town and we all loved the visit to the gardens. We had the best lunch under the trees at Hotel Baudy.

We travelled to PARIS from Vernon and caught the undergorund to Paris from Poissy. We also quite by chance learnt that a house designed by Le Cobusier was in Poissy - another highlight of the trip. we didn%26#39;t see as much of Paris as we would have liked but that will give us an excuse to return but this time to stay in Paris.
