Nice or Cannes or Monaco?

We are traveling for a short time in France and will be spending three days in Nice for Carnival in February. Two questions: 1. Should we stay in a hotel on the Promenade des Anglais (sea side? or city side?) or at one of the smaller, highly rated hotels like Le Grimaldi? 2. Should we plan on staying in Nice or should we branch out to Cannes and/or Monaco?

If you can stay on the Promenade and don%26#39;t mind about traffic, that is a very good choice. Seafront rooms are always fun.

Staying city side is a matter of personal choice, price range, etc. Decision is yours.

I would not personally stay in Monaco as there is nothing much to be done there IMO, apart from looking at rich people and palaces...

Cannes is an option for those who like a samller town than Nice but I prefer Nice for its Old Town, its useums and the Promenade.

And if you are there for the Carnival why bother spending time on the train when you can walk to the location?

Hi,

Just recently returned from our trip to France. We visited Nice and it is beautiful! I would reccommend to stay in a hotel on the Promenade des Anglais, definitely sea side. The view is absolutely gorgeous! And even around this time, there are many sunbathers (somewhat nude beach) and swimmers! I loved Nice, the beach and shopping! There is also a lot of construction going on in the city side. I don%26#39;t remember the main street there, but we walked from the main train station to Vieux Nice (Old Nice). Didn%26#39;t go to Cannes, but did go to Monaco. The place is beautiful, clean, but is expensive. We ate lunch at a cafe next to the MonteCarlo Casino. Talk about paying 15 euros for an ice cream sundae! We also at a cafe before heading for the hike up to the Prince Ranier%26#39;s Palace. Food is similar to our Panera Bread :) I would love to go back to Monaco to see Eze. We just didn%26#39;t have the time. Enjoy your trip! No matter which city you decide to visit in the Riviera, the Mediterranean view is absolutely gorgeous!

where did you stay, or can you suggest a place on the Promenade des Anglais

Try the Mercure Promenade des Anglais, if they still have rooms--and get one with a sea view. You can read my detailed review on this site--we preferred the Mercure to the considerably more expensive La Pérouse.

we also stay at The Westminster which is on Promenade des Anglais and has fab views of the water....iis a nice classical hotel and in a great position.

As I write this I am in my seaside room at the West End, where we always stay when in Nice. Good and reasonable.
