Hello all,
I%26#39;m soooo glad that I found this site. There seems to be a wealth of experience and advice here that will come in handy.
So for my first ever post i%26#39;ll be short(ish) and sweet. My girlfriend and I did 8 days in Paris as part of a 3 month holiday last year and we absolutely loved it! I wasn%26#39;t keen to go there myself, but what can I say, how can you not fall in love with her (Paris and my girlfriend of course).
Because it%26#39;s such an amazing place, I%26#39;ve decided to take my partner back there for a week in May next year - all very secret and she will have no idea until the day before. Unfortunately she is the master organiser and I usually just follow so it%26#39;s going to be a bit of a test for me.
Anyway... I%26#39;m doing all this as %26quot;romantic trip%26quot; ultimately I%26#39;d love to propose to her at the Jardin du Luxembourg during a relaxed picinic... but i digress
To relax a bit more i%26#39;ve booked an apartment through www.paristay.com which seems to be great, but after finding this site I wished I could have checked first. Has anyone used this service before?
I%26#39;m still confident that no matter what, it%26#39;ll turn out to be great place.
So I guess i%26#39;d like to ask (at this stage) a) has any body used Paristay.com before and b) would the weather in May be ok to have a picnic in the park... which I think it might be and in that case I need a back up plan..
Oh, also while i%26#39;m here.. we%26#39;ll be staying just about next to the Louvre. Are there any nice resturants in this area? Authenic and tasy would be great.
Sorry to go on, but I really do apprecaite your advice.
Kindest regards,
Jason

Hi Jason
Why do guys like you always live on the other side of the planet ????
Search for %26quot;weather%26quot;, %26quot;best time to travel%26quot;, %26quot;May%26quot; and similar words. Weather in May last year was (for Parisian standards) freezing - but normally it is fine in May. But as you will find when you search for weather-threads, a picnic in Paris in May is something you decide the same day - unless you go in July when it%26#39;s usually boling hot round the clock.

Just an advice from a girl: You should give her more than %26quot;the day before%26quot; - especially when you write that she uses to be the big organizer, as am I. Give her 2-3 days to get used to the idea, shop for some of these girl-things you HAVE to bring with you and getting all excited over having to pack so fast...... I truly don%26#39;t think that %26quot;the day before%26quot; is a very good idea. But then again, I don%26#39;t know your girlfriend - just a nervous feeling in the stomach I got when reading your post.
ps. you will lots of answers to the rest of your questions.

Hi GitteK,
Thanks for the reply and useful info. Sorry, you are right about the day before thing. What I ment was I want to keep as much as possible a secret for as long as possible, so i%26#39;d definately have her packing etc 3 days before with a guideline on what to bring. The fact they we%26#39;d be going to Paris wouldn%26#39;t be found out until the last minute though - at the airport. Not as risky as it sounds though.
I know this sounds like i%26#39;m cutting it close, but i like to leave her little subtle clues which lead up to the event.
So as far as she knows, we might just be planning a long weekend away to Melbourne (only a few hours away by plane) and having a romantic dinner at a cool %26quot;French%26quot; resturant over there.
She%26#39;s pretty good with surprises and flying by the seat of her pants - even if she normaly is the orgainiser.
I%26#39;ll definately let everyone know how it turns out... still 6 months away thouh. That%26#39;s going to be the hard part for me.. waiting.
Thanks again

OK - understood !! I LOVE the idea of keeping the destination a secret until you actually are at the check-in counter (or if you can; until you head for the departure gate !!!)
The coming 6 months will be the toughest in your life.........

We had a lovely meal at Cafe Marly, which faces onto the Pyramids at the Louvre. Great to sit there looking at the Louvre and people watching. If there are just the two of you, you will get a small round table, with both chairs facing out. There were 5 of us, so unfortuneatly, some of us had our backs to the Pyramids.

Auberge du Louvre is a very cozy place, with nice service and good food. I ate there last summer and had a delicoius cold fishpaté, confit de canard and (of course) a selection of goooood wines.

I also love the element of surprise...love to surprise others. She may need to know the destination beforehand, unless you have access to her passport and can pack along with yours. Also, make sure that she is aware that you will be gone X amount of days...to request off of work, pay bills ahead, etc.
If you are planning on her bringing money with, let her know beforehand that you are taking a trip and that she may want to start saving for souveniers ahead of time. Depends on the girl, but I HATE the feeling of having to ask someone for money to buy a little something for my family at home. However, I%26#39;m sure that you have already thought about that. Also, you may want to look into renting an international cell phone or write down some of her internet access e-mail addresses for her.... She will be SO excited with the proposal and may want to contact family or a best friend.
Fun little %26quot;hints%26quot; before you go that she may not cue into: a spaghetti dinner with Americanized French Bread, a movie (not an obvious Da%26#39;Vinci Code, however, one that shows a quick setting in Paris), Breakfast of French toast, ...you get the idea.
Have a FABULOUS and MEMORABLE trip!

If you ever become single CALL ME!
I think Jardin Luxembourg can be a bit hard for picknick becuse you cant sit on the grass, I guess I would maybe do Champs Mars in the evening instead, for the day i can see if my very unromantical boyfriend maybe had some romantic ex that showed him a good park for picknick during the day. I will be back tomorrow with more info!

Else I think it will be cool with the suprise, if she just knows she has to pack, what she needs to pack, that she should have a bit of money with her and when it is! She will be so happy! In may I took my boyfriend on this boatcruise in Norway, dident tell him until it was so obvious that he could have guessed by himself and he was so so happy (more about the boat then the landscapes but still) and he took me for a suprise trip to french country side and we stayed in a castle I got so happy! And if he took me to the other side of the world, like australia, damn I would be the luckiest girl alive!

Jut to clarify, you can picnic on the grass at Luxembourg gardens, but only while it is light out.
Mine kidnapped me and told me to pack for Alaska, I laughed and packed for Hawaii. I stopped laughing when we got to the airport and headed for the Alaska airlines counter. The funny thing was that Club Med had borrowed the Alaska counter and we were going to Tahiti. He could not have done better had he tried to plan it.
