CD shops in Paris

Can our experts advise on these, please? Having just spent a very enjoyable few days in Paris, and being over 50 years of age, I%26#39;m rather disappointed that I never came across any CD shops that cater for, shall we say, the more mature listener! Music of the 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, swing, jazz etc, as opposed to Virgin Megastores, of which there seem to be a lot in Paris. Secondhand CDs and records too interest me. Where would I go to see this sort of shop, do you think? Any you can recommend? Thanks.

Actually, you can find everything in the Megastores, including the kinds of music you mention. Of course, you would have to look a little harder than for the latest Justin Timberlake CD! The FNAC at Bastille, next to the Opera, is only dedicated to music, with maybe a broader selection than at Les Halles or Ternes.

Having said that, there are shops that cater to the styles of music you are looking for:

Crocojazz (64 rue de la Montagne Sainte-Geneviève, 5th, in the Sorbonne area) is IMO the best one, with a connoisseur staff and plenty of second hand CDs.

Paris Jazz Corner (parisjazzcorner.com) is the competition, some say it%26#39;s actually better than Croco.

Ditto for Jussieu Jazz (jussieumusic.com).

The good thing about these three addresses, is that they within walking distance from each other. I think that between the three of them, you would be able to %26quot;find your happiness%26quot; as we say in French.

I could also give you addresses that specialise in classical or world music, even French music from the 60s if that%26#39;s to your liking!

There is a small chain called Hamonia that has a good jazz selection and lots of International music. I know that the staff at their shop St Placide in the 6th s extrememly knowledgable and they will play ay CD for you to listen to before purchase. The problem is that everytime I go there for a disc, I end up walking out with four or five.

The music shop at the Bon Marche is geared more towards the mature listener.

Harmonia Mundi is indeed a good label/chain, even though its core business is more classical music, with recent inroads into jazz and world music. There are other shops in Paris on avenue de l%26#39;Opéra, rue de Rivoli and the Cité de la Musique at La Villette.

You might try any of the following:

Crocodisc

64 rue de la Montagne Ste-Genevieve, 5e

Librarie Gilda

36 rue des Bourdonnais, 1er

Paris Jazz Corner

5 rue de Navarre, 5e

I loved Harmonia Mundi on Rue de Rivoli. The woman there was very helpful in helping me find something for my dad that he didn%26#39;t already have.

Thank you all very much, I will make a note of these for my next visit.
