Me and my boyfriend will be studying at the Universite Paris-Dauphine for 5 mths from end Jan to end June 2007. I understand that apartments in Paris are expensive. So I%26#39;m having a lot of trouble looking for cheap student apartment rental. Tried searching online websites like www.paristay.com but their offers are still on the high side for us. We%26#39;re looking for a studio that%26#39;s at least 20m2 with a monthly rental of 500-700 euros, including utilities. Is that possible to find? Its our first time in Europe too and we know no french.
Any help will be greatly appreciated! Thanks all you happy travellers!

I searched www.lodgis.com for apartments with separate bedroom, which I would certainly want for such a long stay:
This one I would run VERY fast to get, if I were you:
…lodgis.com/en/…
-------------------------
And this one also looks cute - though it is a little outside central Paris. But the village-road looks nice:
…lodgis.com/en/…
------------
Not very romantic location - but OK:
…lodgis.com/en/…
---------------
And it won%26#39;t get anymore romantic than this - and think of the filmstar thighs you will have after 5 months of walking up to 7th floor:
…lodgis.com/en/…
|||
........... forget about Montmartre on the 7th floor - there is only one single bed. And no matter how much in luv with Mr.Handsome you are right now, trust me: you will end up desparate for a bed to yourself !!!

I spent a school year in Paris in a dorm room that had nothing more than a twin bed... it was so great that almost two deacades later we are married with two kids. Because of my personal experience, I would rather have a central location, but a few less m2.
Fusac is a magazine that serves the french-american community. They have online listing and you may find something there.
You can also try the Cite Universitaire in the 14th. They have dorms for foreign students.

Most of the apartment listing shown on sites like Paristay.com and others will be short-term, %26#39;..tourist..%26#39; properties....and more expensive than longer term rentals. %26#39;..student housing..%26#39; anywhere is more difficult to find...and usually a damn site less attractive....and even then, I suspect that you%26#39;re going to have to INCREASE your housing budget by factors of magnitude
You might try checking some of the listing at FUSAC
http://www.fusac.com/
and you might check with any housing assistance office that Université Paris has.

KD%26#39;s suggestion about you looking up what Dauphine has to offer in terms of accommodation services prompted me to look up the University%26#39;s website. And they actually have a wealth of addresses, websites, etc for their foreign students. Guess what? It%26#39;s even in English...
http://www.sri.dauphine.fr/index.php?id=120
PS I shoud warn you that it will be a bit difficult to survive/enjoy Paris for six months without knowing a word of French. Not to mention your classes, but they must be in English, unless you are taking French as a foreign language for beginners.

Craig%26#39;s List and, as previously suggested FUSAC
http://paris.craigslist.org/
not only can you look for rentals as they are posted daily, but you can post your own listing under %26#39;Apt/Housing Wanted%26#39;.
The %26#39;sublets/temp housing%26#39; area is very useful. Good Luck.

Thanks Gittek for the lodgis link! I found so many more cheaper student rentals there then anywhere else. I%26#39;m even considering your first suggestion! But the thing about the website is it says it includes heater, gas, water charges. Which i find hard to believe for rents at 500 euros. I%26#39;m checking with the company now and will update you guys.
Dauphine has several links that would help foreign students find housing. However, most of the time, the links are in French. Big problem there. That%26#39;s what got me searching for other websites to get housing.
KDKSAIL, Dauphine is very slow in helping us get housing. So we%26#39;ve taken the liberty to search on our own.
Hey Bob, we will be taking Elementary French at the university but I%26#39;ve heard that yes, if one knows no French, tough life. But i%26#39;m sure it makes living in a foreign country all the more interesting!
Actually I was considering taking over the apartment of any of my other schoolmates over there on exchange now. But I%26#39;ve yet to find out who%26#39;s living on off campus housing. It would save us alot of trouble and plus they could probably pass us whatever they have there :)
I was looking at http://www.laureades.com/ang/index.html Now i%26#39;m not too sure if we want to still have our own apartment or should we go for a hostel type of residence. Do you guys have any idea roughly how much is spent on utilities? Would it exceed 50 euros? Cuz the hostel I think includes utilities.
We%26#39;ve actually posted 2 ads on Craig%26#39;s List. Some replied. Some were scammers. One offered us a posh looking place (looks like a showroom flat) for 500 euros. Yea right! We replied to some but after some time, the owners stopped replying.

Hi soothingrief
I looke at the apts again. You should notice that the one in Rue Charonne also only has a single bed in the bedroomn, but a sofabed in the living room.
This one (though no pictures available at the moment - must be available with Lodgis.) is in Montmartre and has a double bed in the bedroom. It is 30 m2 - so a little more spacious than the others.

It%26#39;s unlikely that electric is included - it%26#39;s wasn%26#39;t for monthly vacation rentals when I rented through them. Electric is expensive in France but how much your bill would be depends on how much you use. You%26#39;ll definately be using the heat for a few months, but how much you use the tv, pc, washer or leave all the lights on is an unknown.
Also,do not forget Lodgis%26#39; agency fee - it will amount to about a months rent for a 6month stay and the landlord will want a security deposit of at least a months rent too.
Are you sure the Craig%26#39;s list response was quoting you a monthly rental? Some listings on there quote a weekly price and $500 a week for a long stay would get you quite a nice apartment.

Hey thanks GitteK. You%26#39;ve been really helpful. That apartment%26#39;s not open for rental until October 2007. We%26#39;ll be there from 23 Jan 2007 - 30 Jun 2007. So can%26#39;t apply for that.
Anyway we%26#39;ve decided to go back to Dauphine. Hopefully we can still get a place in the hostel. Otherwise off campus hostel will be fine too.
