Paris Experts (or shoppers) ....Need Some Recommendations

I am heading to Paris for a week on December 5, 2006 and have a few things on my %26quot;wish list%26quot; I%26#39;d like to purchase while I am there (I%26#39;ve been a very good girl this year - chuckle).

1. French Music - I love to bring back music from my travels - each time I play the CD it will remind me of Paris. Any suggestions on CD%26#39;s to buy? I am not familiar with french musicians but love any music other than country.

2. A French print - where to buy an art quality print to take home that is quintessentially French?

3. Pottery - I collect pottery and would love to take an authentic (as in made in France) piece.

4. French table cloth - I%26#39;ve measured the table - I was thinking the home department of Galleries L?

5. Definitely E. Dehilliron for whisks. I love to bake and want a couple of good quality whisks.

Thanks in advance for your help. I will return the favour one day!

Cheers!

GL is a good idea for the tablecoth, but don%26#39;t rule out BHV or Bon Marche. Gien has a wonderful shop on Rue Jaob (7th arr) for their dishes. They make wonderful plates, bowls, platters. As far as music, try Patricia Kaas, Edith Piaf or even Pink Martini(I know, they are based in Seattle, but Autrefois is still a great song)

Bon Chance!

1. I guess you dont want french world artists that you can buy anywhere but something specially french thats not played on Canadian radio?

You could go for french folkmusic, personally I really like the corsican folk music, it really has a special sound. There are also some famous Operas that could be of intrest and they have some famous classical music composers like Bizet, but ofcause his music you can buy in Alberta too.

Else France is very influenced by there colonial days, specially northern africa and the music that has come out of this mix is called Rai, a very famous and in france loved rai musican is Khaled. If you buy anything by Khaled make sure it contains the songs Aicha (a song most french know by heart, and personally I find it to be one of the worlds most beutiful) and Abdel Khader. He sings in french and arabic.

All of this music can be found in the big CD stores, just ask for help and they will guide you, and they will probably know more about folkmusic etc than me. But really I would by Khaled if I were you.

2. In Paris you will find alot of Vintage prints. Some of the most famous ones are the commercial prints for Moulin Rouge made by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.

3. Here I cant help you, I know some pottery that you see more often in Peoples houses, but I dont know the names...

4. I think that I would not go to G L, those kinds of stores are often pretty boring and mainstream and sell brands you can buy all over the world. I would maybe go for smaller design stores. I wrote myselg a message her some weeks ago asking for that so Im myself in need of help when it comes to that.

5. Funny you mention it I plan to go to dehillerin next time I visit too, to buy some stuff for my kitchen=)

Enjoy

2. There are many fine print dealers clustered on and around the Rue de Seine. They are reputable and have prints at many different price points.

4. I also like:

Le Jacquard Français - Boutique

12, rue du Chevalier de St George

(ex Rue Richepanse)

75001 Paris

Tel: 33 1 42 97 40 49

While you can find these at the department stores, the whole line is here.

Happy shopping!

Whatever else you decide to get, be sure to get a CD by Edith Piaf, aka The Little Sparrow. When you listen to her sing you%26#39;ll realize that her music is what goes around in your head when you think of Paris.

Bon voyage/

1) In most of the tourist areas you will spot shops selling cheap CDs and DVDs. These places usually have quite a few compilation CDs of French music from various decades.

2) Check out the bouquinists stands alog the Seine, some prints and even some affordable original art.

3) On the north half of the rue Chabonnais in the 2nd there is a local potter (across from the trendy looking asin tea house) who does some beautiful work. She is usually there during school hours. If the shop looks closed, try knocking, as she maybe int he back.

4) I get my French Jacquard cloths at the discount places. I prefer the one on the rue St Dominique, but can not remember the name, or the exact location. I have suggested it before on TA, so you may want to try a search. Otherwise, there are two on the southern side or rue St Placide between Sevres and Cherche Midi.

%26lt;%26lt;3. Pottery - I collect pottery and would love to take an authentic (as in made in France) piece.%26gt;%26gt;

pottery from La Tuile a Loup (not sure if it%26#39;s pottery unique to France, but you have a place to look).

As I was reading other Paris Forum categories, I ran across the above from a %26quot;poster%26quot; named Aude. Other ideas, if your interested, can be found in the topic named %26quot;What%26#39;s the best thing you bought in Paris?%26quot;

I second Phread%26#39;s recommendation for the discount stores on St Placide for tablecloths. They usually have a fairly nice selection at good prices.

I have one more idea for music and thats Carla Bruni I specially like asong by her called Quelqu%26#39;un m%26#39;a dit very good, I dont speak french and I have a feeling its even better if you do. She is good but not as famous outside france as Piaff, I mean her people listen to everywhere from Kiruna to Ushuaia.

Good Luck

Ohh forgot to tell what kind of music Carla is, its kind of singer songwriter, very good music to put in the background at home or to listen to load, very soft and nice.

In the topic forum I listed earlier, there is also a suggestion for music. I do not remember the name of the singer but I believe it was female.
