Can anyone tell me if it is possible to take any day trips into the Alps from Grenoble using public transport. I will be visiting in January and wondered if there are any escorted coach trips for example.

You can take a gondola up into the alps by the ski resorts.

I couldn%26#39;t find any escorted coach trips, but you could look at the snow resort service buses on http://www.transisere.fr/ TLJ is %26#39;tous les jours%26#39; (every day) but the other abbreviations and exceptions looked a bit more complicated.
The sncf website shows direct trains from Grenoble to Annecy, via Aix-les-Bains, which could be a good day out. Leave at 9.26, arrive 11.01, and a couple of alternatives to return late afternoon. €32.40 return.
Otherwise, you could e-mail the Grenoble Tourist Office grenoble-isere-tourisme.com/accueil_eng.htm for more help (or to confirm the times of the ski buses!)
