Train - Paris to Frankfurt - sleeping compartments?

I did a search but couldn%26#39;t find any information on sleeping compartments.

We are taking a night train from Paris to Frankfurt in January. Just curious if anyone has done this trip and how comfortable the beds are - how big the compartment is and if you can actually sleep while travelling.

Most TA Paris regulars know that I am not a fan of night trains, so I won%26#39;t be blowing any trumpet here. I would just answer your question about wheter one sleeps on these trains: personally, I don%26#39;t, especially on such short trips, with many stops between Paris and Frankfurt. If I were you, I would look at the following alternatives:

- The day train ex Paris Est: there are 3 or 4 direct trains ex Paris Est to Frankfurt, it takes 6 1/2 hours.

- The day train by Thalys and Cologne: as many Thalys trains more or less to Cologne ex Paris Nord, then a connection to Frankfurt - 5 1/2 hours including the connection time.

- The low cost plane: Air Berlin (airberlin.com) has a daily flight ex CDG to FRA with a connection in Nürnberg. 3h50, which, given the usual extra time needed for flying, actually means more time than the Thalys to arrive in central Frankfurt.

Thank you Bob. We will look into those alternatives - however, it might be out of our hands (relative is booking for us) -

A further question - when the train makes those other stops, do they do a check of any kind - or is it just the noise etc of the stopping that wakes you up.

Have never taken a train before so really not sure what to expect.

LD --

I take night trains on almost every trip to Europe - although I have never taken this particular one.

The compartment is not very big - but then you%26#39;re not likely to be throwing a sock hop as my parents used to say.

What wakes one up is either the departing passengers banging their luggage into the door of your compartment or the actual stopping of the train - the lack of motion rather than than the squeal of the breaks --I would suggest that you take some ear plugs and a sleep mask - there is always a light leak through the curtain(s).

Bon voyage.

Thank you BC Traveller! I am going to take that suggestion.

Hopefully we can get a little sleep - with the next day flight back to Vancouver from Frankfurt and work the next morning, will need every little bit of sleep.

My choice...Eurowings, Paris Frankfurt......early am flight, just long enough for a lite breakfast and rapid deplaning.....

|||

Eurowings are just a subsidiary of Lufthansa. Your %26quot;choice%26quot; might be pleasant indeed but would cost as much as any LH or AF flight between the two cities, ie about €500 for a single flight, €100 for a false return flight whose return leg would be ignored.

I am not a great fan of night trains myself... Especially not for a %26quot;short%26quot; distance, as Bob said, you have either the option of taking the fast train (Thalys) to Cologne and switch there or you have a direct train at 8ish am that takes 6.5 hrs, the first option taking about 5hrs.

The night train takes a little more than 8hrs, with the delays let%26#39;s say 8.5. I guess in terms of time the Thalys option is the best, for two reasons, of course the time factor and you%26#39;ll be able to ride the two fastest trains in Europe (almost in the world actually), the TGV and the ICE, which will change you a lot from driving 65 mph on a canadian highway :)

Just to add to Bob_S%26#39;s comment, Eurowings doesn%26#39;t fly from Paris to Frankfurt regardless of how much you are willing to pay.

ancey, weren%26#39;t you on a job hunt in Paris? How did that work for you? Well, I hope...
