The nearest big supermarket to Villefranche is the new Champion at Mont Boron - on the main Nice/Villefranche road.
As for car rental, never found a need here that public transport doesn%26#39;t satisfy at a freaction of the cost. ( Just a thought - why save money on shopping to waste it on car rental?)

thanks for the info ,the cost of a taxi from the airport = nearly the cost of a car for the week as there are five of us .thought that we could explore more with the car .

There are plenty of food shops in Villefranche. Two smallish supermarkets near the traffic lights on the main road and one just behind the seafront, plus four bakeries, fruit shops, butchers etc.
I agree with Nicelife about train/bus versus car. Even in September it can be difficult to park in Villefranche and the train is the quickest way to travel along the coast. Buses are reliable and very cheap. A car is only useful if you want to travel inland. You won%26#39;t be able to hire a car in or near Villefranche.
With five people a hire car can be quite economic but watch out for hidden extras.
