What's your favorite museum/monument in Paris and why?

Interested to read others opinions (also need ideas for my upcoming trip at the end of the week).

Please share!!!

Thanks.

My favorite may not be an obvious choice, but I love the Hotel de Ville. The architecture is gorgeous, first of all. But the history of the building itself is so interesting. I sit at the plaza for long periods of time just contemplating it when I%26#39;m in Paris. I also have an interest in WWII history so there%26#39;s that too. Just a beautiful building.

I do not have one, but there are two I go back to again, and again, and again.

1) The Louvre. So much of the art in there has an amazing story to tell. As a student I would go there to do my homework and each week pick one piece to sit in front of and study. Still go there just to read a book in the shadow of some great art.

2) The Rodin Museum gardens. There is a great picnic space in the back. I like just hanging there, lunching, enjoying a coffee from the cafe, reading a book and watching as the seasons change.

3) (ok, I lied) The Eiffel Tower. It is a beautiful structure, all that soild steel in graceful curves and fanciful swirls. I love the juxupositions. But, I don%26#39;t really go back there for that, so much as the soccer field is at the base, so I have no choice.

Musée d´Orsay. It is a beautiful building that used to be a train station and the masterworks inside are outstanding, especially if you like %26quot;les impressionistes%26quot;

My favorite museum is Nissim de Camondo, for the intimacy one get with some of the finest examples of 18th century art. At the same time the atmosphere is still very much preserved and one can feel like a guest in a private hotel. The story of the family is also riveting.

I also like the Gustave Moreau for the incredible richness of the thousands of drawings, I always find a few hours to just sit look in the cabinets and be amazed and the creativity of this artist.

But my favorite is not a museum or a monument but the river that been running forever through the most beautiful city there is. Le pont des Arts late in the evening is the place I go to, in my mind, when I miss Paris, which is everyday I do have the luck to be there.

Museum - The Rodin, for it%26#39;s casual, at your own pace ambiance. It%26#39;s gardens and outdoor cafe for taking a welcome break before starting again. And, especially for me, the works of Camille Claudel.

Monument - The Tour Eiffel. To look at from across the river, especially when it %26#39;twinkles%26#39;, not so much to be in/up.

For sheer %26#39;wow%26#39; factor - the interior of Sainte Chapelle.

The various magicians, strolling players, performance artists in the forecourt of the Pompidou Centre (Beaubourg) on Sundays (don%26#39;t know if they do this in winter though).

Museums and monuments aren%26#39;t really why I go to Paris, but here are my favorites anyway, just because I%26#39;m bored waiting for a plane:

Musée Marmottan because I love Monet.

Monuments are harder as I don%26#39;t pay much attention to them. Perhaps Notre Dame. Many of my favorite parts of Paris are quite close to it.

My favorite museum is the Musee D%26#39;Orsay. I like the structure of the building, not to mention all of the treasures that it has to offer. I prefer it over the Louvre simply because the latter is so large that I find it overwhelming.

I love the Opera Garnier, not only because I find the building beautiful, but it makes me think of my favorite musical %26quot;Phantom of the Opera%26quot;.

Finally, I%26#39;ll always be partial to Sainte Chappelle because it%26#39;s a unique gem with breathtaking stained glass windows.

Did anyone mention Musee Carnalavet in the Marias?: it is set in fascinating old mansions in thh Marias - many rooms are set up as they were in the past, plus many paintings and so on telling the history of Paris - it is really interesting, when we went there in late May there were very few people, we almost had it to ourselves. Then you can stroll alonmg to the beautiful Place Vosges nearby, or wander around the intriguing Marais area. We were told about the Musee by a Parisian who said it was her favourite place to visit.
