We are trying to identify another photograph. this was taken by an ancestor of someone I work with. All we know is that it was taken in the late 1800%26#39;s in Europe. You can see rows of tents along the walkways in the park. We think it might be one of the large expositions. Does this look like Paris to anyone?

I don%26#39;t think it%26#39;s Paris, the buildings on the side look more like Turkey or somewhere in the Balkans (former Yugoslavia maybe)
|||
i dont think its in paris either, the buildings look more from eastern countries.

I hate to disagree with two residents of Paris but....
I have a very strong feeling that it is, as you suggest, a photo of the Exposition Universelle of 1889. I%26#39;d be willing to bet money that it is a view of the Champ de Mars taken from the Eiffel Tower probably from the first level.
|||
Nope, not the Champ de Mars (i tought about this too) , after checking with other photos, the building in the backgound is not the Ecole Militaire (it looks a bit like it, but the Ecole militaire is wider and lower, and the buildings on both sides are not the right style and too close from the central %26quot;alley%26quot;)
|||
No, it is not the École Militaire. The Champ de Mars was covered with buildings constructed just for the Exposition. They were removed afterwards. I%26#39;m still betting it is the 1889 Expo.

In fact the ET itself was intended only as a temporary structure. It was only when its importance for radio communication was realized that it was saved from dismantling.

Hi Rob still searching for places? :-)
Check this photo, I%26#39;m not sure the fountains look the same (exposition universelle 1889)

I think happyindijon%26#39;s photo is pretty compelling evidence. In any case, he set me off on an image hunt and I found these — also interesting but not necessarily conclusive:
www.photoart.plus.com/expos/paris891.htm
But this plan of the Exposition absolutely determines not only that it is in fact the Exposition, but that the print is %26quot;flopped%26quot; left to right if the plan view is accurate. Look at where the oval %26quot;allée%26quot; is located in the photo vs. the plan.

nope i really dont think it is as i found several pictures of the 1889 exposition universelle and its really different, for ex on this page you can see old pictures lefildutemps.free.fr/paris/pont_iena.htm its very different, the buildings, the grass etc.

And it%26#39;s neither the Petit Palais nor the Grand Palais
