Philippe Auguste's Wall

Has anyone on this board walked the path (or part of the path) of the wall of Phillippe Auguste?

If so, what are your comments?

I%26#39;ve %26#39;..poked around..%26#39; at a few of the Left Bank places in the 5eme and 6eme where portions of the Philippe-Auguste Wall are still accessable...but it%26#39;s often a bit of a %26#39;..treasure hunt..%26#39; to find them..and though interesting...the effort can be a bit exhausting. Most of the places where sections have been restored to something other than a barely recognizable %26#39;pile of old stones%26#39; and give some impression of what the original wall must have looked like, are on private property.

But I suppose as good a reason as any for taking this %26#39;..treasure hunt..%26#39; may be the other places and things you may come across along the way...so perhaps the %26#39;..journey..%26#39; is its own reward.

For a basic Philippe-Auguste %26#39;primer%26#39;, check out--

Another interesting %26#39;..journey..%26#39; that may be taken for much the same reason is to follow the trail of ARAGO MEDALLIONS across Paris--

I %26quot;walked%26quot; the Arago route and it%26#39;s really great!

I posted a Tripreport about here on TA.

Pixfield, I am planning to look into Nikita%26#39;s Arago plaque route next time I am in Paris. If you want details of the wall, Beatchick posted a long trip report on Fodors that included details of where it is an photos etc after her trip last February. Just search for the name of the wall or no doubt you will find some links on her VT pages.

Thanks Faux,

Come to think of it, Beatchick gave me the idea regarding the wall when we had a VT meeting in Paris last year. I will contact her about it.

Thanks again!

FIrst thing to do would be to look at a map of Paris at the time of Philippe Auguste. Charles 9 (5?) also built a wall but they are different.

So a little research can be usefull. Musee Carnavalet may have some maps or drawings.

Most visible parts are on the left bank , one portion is used as the main supporting wall in a parking garage on rue Dauphine. There is a plaque indicating the location. Maison de la Catalogne has a piece in their store as well. Then cour de Rohan etc.

I guess that all of you %26quot;wall%26quot; and %26quot;plaque%26quot; treasure-hunt people are the experienced Paris travellers. I%26#39;ve yet to visit certain churches, museums, gardens, etc.

From the point of view of the %26#39;..journey..%26#39; (and what one may discover along the way) being is its own %26#39;..reward..%26#39;....I don%26#39;t suppose that following these routes of medallions or plaques is all that different from beginning a day with any itinerary of the day%26#39;s touring. Along the %26#39;..route(s)..%26#39; there is nothing to stop you from dropping in someplace(s) on a list of other %26#39;..things to see / do..%26#39; or detouring this way or that, along the %26#39;route%26#39;.....or abandoning the %26#39;route%26#39; altogether for another, as mood and moment strike. More personal %26#39;..gems / favorites..%26#39; have been %26#39;..discovered..%26#39; by serendipity, than any other. There are still %26#39;..routes..%26#39; we%26#39;ll take on our way %26#39;somewhere else%26#39;, simply for the pleasure of re-discovering %26#39;..old friends..%26#39; along the way that we had just happened upon in the past. I can%26#39;t begin to count the times that I%26#39;ve heard the others%26#39; tales of trips to this place or that that included, %26quot;...we were walking down the street to (somewhere else), turned the corner and there (something unexpected) was.....WOW !!!...%26quot;.

Merci mille fois, Faux!

Here%26#39;s a link to some photos I took from our wall tour so you guys can take a virtual tour if you%26#39;d like. Click on the thumbnails to see larger photos %26amp; perhaps some commentary.

I agree with KDKSAIL that you%26#39;ll no doubt encounter serendipitous experiences in veering off the path for a moment. In our case, one of favorite places to veer off to was Bonbonerie de Buci. hee hee

We had a wonderful that day. (and, ahem, you all can see what Pixfield looks like as we met up with him at the end of that day) ;-) He%26#39;s a nice guy and a charmer and a well-informed guy - wonderful to converse with!

ciao,

Beatchick
