There is a Vit%26#39;halles on bd des Batignolles, it%26#39;s three métro stations away on line 2. www.vithalles.fr.

There is also a Cercle de la Forme on rue du Simplon in the upper 18th. That%26#39;s all for the chains.

If you want to look for independent, smaller gyms, you can look it up on pagesjaunes.fr, stating %26quot;Salles de remise en forme%26quot; under %26quot;Activités%26quot;, and %26quot;Paris 18%26quot; under %26quot;Localité%26quot;

|||

even easier - look it up here under %26quot;gym%26quot;

http://www.pagesjaunes.fr/pj.cgi?lang=en

How cool is having the yellow pages in a foreign language?

Mr. Wizard, we thought we were too cool, with the local phone book in our utility closet in the foyer of our apartment. We looked up all sorts of things while in Paris...cellphone stores when our charger died...a store I couldn%26#39;t find...restaurant phone numbers to make reservations...all kinds of things. And though you may be considered a %26quot;local%26quot; now, we felt like %26quot;locals%26quot; for the week. It was tres fun!

Sorry...off-topic:(

++++++ don%26#39;t join / attend Vithalles what ever you do +++++++

I%26#39;ve had all my stuff stolen from a padlocked locker (if you jiggle the locker they actually open, which management know but don%26#39;t bother to tell you.......)

coupled with that I was pretty fed up it anyway as the gym (Nation), in particular, the cardio machines are dirty (which after mentioning it three times, they sent the cleaning lady to clean as I was actually using it!) , sometimes there%26#39;s no water in the vending machines or in the water tap and no air conditioning, even during August (36 - 38 degrees), oh, yeah and the windows don%26#39;t open either!

I wrote a letter to head office about my stuff being stolen, they still haven%26#39;t replied and have mislaid the letter and police report, ie; they don%26#39;t care in the slightest - symptomatic of the entire chain........

sorry to be so negative, but you have been warned.

Before the thread gets wiped off for being off topic, let me just say that I joined Vit%26#39;halles too this summer to try a chain that would be different from Club Med Gym and to take advantage of their Pilates class. To be honest, so far the assessment is not very positive, the harshest judgment having to deal with, I agree with you, the cleanliness issue. I am far from being hysterical on this department, but it has gotten to a point where the problem is not cleanliness, it%26#39;s hygiene. As for the Pilates classes, they are basic, repetitive and crowded.

Having said that, the staff at V%26#39;H are more committed and nicer than at CMG, and there is less of a %26quot;factory%26quot; feel. As for the locker theft issue, unfortunately, I have witnessed so many of those incidents at CMG (and so far none at Vit%26#39;halles), that I don%26#39;t think you can put the blame on the management for this. It%26#39;s like when people on TA write a lengthy post telling all tourists to boycott such or such city because the poster has been alledgedly taken for a ride by a shop assistant or a waiter. Locker theft is unfortunately not uncommon among Paris chain gyms such as CMG, Espaces de la Forme or Vit%26#39;halles: they are relatively cheap, work a lot with the Comités d%26#39;Entreprise, and their policy is to attract as many members as possible. If you want to avoid this mass factor, you can join l%26#39;Usine, where, hopefully, the people who will have forked up €1,200 a year for their membership are not %26quot;the type%26quot; to try and break into your locker. But, even there, I wouldn%26#39;t swear it never happens. Meanwhile, and I know this might be geographically surreal if you live in the Nation area, but you can try the Raspail Vit%26#39;halles club, which is delightfully civilised and Rive gauche - and incidentally has a strong American membership.

and then there%26#39;s walking/jogging/running/isometrics/whatever, that you can do for free, safely and enjoy the sights of Paris while you%26#39;re at it.....
